Talked to Dad late tonight. We kept it light at first—weather, the snow and ice, and my trip to Atlanta.

Then I asked whether he’d been able to get in touch with Gerald. He said he tried calling but didn’t get an answer. He told me Gerald is probably out of town or didn’t have his phone around.

I don’t buy that. It seems obvious that Gerald is intentionally ignoring his call.

I asked Dad if he’d considered sending a text, and he said he’s not good at texting and has never communicated that way with his brothers. I get it—it’s hard enough to get him to read my texts, so that part makes sense.

What doesn’t make sense is Gerald’s lack of response. For all he knows, Dad could have been in an emergency situation needing help. He knows Dad is alone and not in great health. And still… nothing. Not even a quick “Are you okay?” or “Do you need anything?”

So cold, so heartless.

Where in the Bible does it say to ignore your brother in need? I thought of the story of Joseph in the Bible when his brothers sold him into slavery. Yet, when his brothers came to him for help 7 years later, Joseph instantly forgave them. He welcomed them and only showed them love and care.

But, Gerald can’t even return a phone call.
